Spires Music is an organisation that exists to give Coventry, Warwickshire and the local region greater access to the riches of the classical musical repertoire from musicians performing at a professional level.

It was founded in 2005 by Colin Touchin, formerly Director of Music at Warwick University, as a means of fulfilling a desire to create the opportunity for professional and advanced non-professional musicians to work together to provide high quality choral and orchestral performances. It has grown from three or four concerts a year, but has expanded in the last year.

Spires Music comprises the Spires Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) and the Spires Philharmonic Chorus (SPC). From 2011 to 2015 we also ran the Spires Youth Orchestra to allow young musicians between 11 and 21 to perform at the highest level possible in the region. With the merger of the Coventry Youth Orchestra with Warwickshire youth music activites in 2015, we closed the SYO to give the new Coventry and Warwickshire Youth Orchestra the best chance. We encourage young musicians to join the CWYO, but the most able (grade 8 or above) are welcome to audition for the professional/amateur Spires Philharmonic Orchestra.

Easter Concert — 7 April 2018

The recent Play and Sing Workshop was a pre-cursor to our Easter Concert on Saturday 7 April at Coventry Cathedral at 4:30 pm.

Spires Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will be joined by the Lufthansa Choir from Frankfurt for a full performance of the Brahms German Requiem, and of the Symphony No 6 in D major by Dvorak. The concert will be conducted by Colin Touchin.

Spires Chorus then embarks on a tour to Frankfurt for a repeat of this concert as guests of the Lufthansa Choir and Orchestra.

As our Chairman, Helen Atwood has said: "In the centenary year of the ending of the First World War, our concerts will be not only acts of remembrance but also of peace and reconciliation, celebrating our common values through the joy of music-making".

The Lufthansa Orchestra and its Chorus are made up of pilots, flight attendants, technicians, office workers and many more, who get together in their spare time to present 2–3 special concerts every year as well as Lufthansa corporate events. Their musical director is our own Colin Touchin.

See an interesting short documentary on the Orchestra here on YouTube and a YouTube search on 'Lufthansa ochester' finds a series of other related clips showing the orchestra and choir in performance.

More details of the concert will be published in due course.
